Freedom: Does it Still Ring?

Freedom is a concept that most of us take for granted. In his address to Congress, President Bush has said that “freedom and fear are at war.” But what is this concept of freedom that we hold so dear?

According to Eric Foner, the concept of freedom has meant different things at different times. Slavery was once thought compatible with a nation of freedom. The terrorist attacks have created the latest dialogue on how we as a country understand freedom.
