Immigration: Should We Tighten the Borders?

In the past, arguments over U.S. immigration policy revolved around the economic impact that new citizens would have on those already living here. In the post-September 11th world, that discussion has moved to include questions about domestic security. Yesterday, President Bush announced an initiative to strengthen the intelligence capacities of immigration officials to prevent would-be terrorists from entering the country. But Bush sounded a moderate note, underscoring the importance of keeping our borders open. In this time of heightened anxiety, many are calling for dramatic changes in immigration policies. Is it time for the U.S. to tighten its borders?

Steven Camarata, Director of research for the Center for Immigration Studies;
