India and Pakistan: A Himalayan Time Bomb?

As the world’s attention focuses on Afghanistan, just to the east lies the explosive region of India and Pakistan. Yesterday in the Indian state of Kashmir, Islamic militants from Pakistan killed 30 with a car bomb and gunfire. Rebels have been fighting for years for independence from India. India charges Pakistan with arming the rebels.

The border squabbles and political instability in Pakistan and India are problematic enough. But the problem is compounded by the situation in Afghanistan and the nuclear capabilities of both nations. Could instability in the Himalayas possibly lead to nuclear war?

Guests:

Stephen Cohen, Senior Fellow in Policy Studies at the Brookings Institute ;

William Clark, Jr., former U.S. Ambassador to India;

Charles Heyman, editor of “Jane’s World Army” on how the West is preparing for war
