Northern Alliance troops have moved into Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, after Taliban troops withdrew early Tuesday morning. The Alliance immediately called for the United Nations to send envoys to begin setting up an interim government for Afghanistan. The dramatic retreat of the Taliban has raised hopes that the campaign in Afghanistan may be shorter than originally anticipated. For weeks, there has been negative speculation that we might be entering a quagmire; that the harsh winter would entrench the Taliban; that bombing during Ramadan would shake the U.S.-led alliance.
