The Palestinian Conundrum

Osama bin Laden has said that the United States will not experience peace until the people of Palestine have their own security. But bin Laden’s mission is clearly not motivated by love for the Palestinians. So why does he link his attacks to their plight? The reason is the strong emotional pull that the Palestinian issue has in the Arab world, according to Shibley Telhami. In a survey that Telhami commissioned, the majority of five Arab countries listed the Palestinian issue as the “single most important issue to them personally.” Why does the Palestinian issue elicit such an emotional response among Arabs? And what can the U.S. do diffuse this difficult issue?
