The Tragic Death of Daniel Pearl

Government officials confirmed last night that kidnapped Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl had been killed by his captors. Pearl was abducted on January 23rd while reporting on a story about the possible links between alleged “shoe-bomber” Richard Reid and Pakistani militants.

Pearl’s death has shaken journalists worldwide, who have to face dangers every day in carrying out their jobs. In this age of increased terrorism, journalists could become an even greater target for anti-American militant groups.

This hour, we look back at the life and career of Daniel Pearl. And we examine the impact his abduction and murder could have on the field of overseas journalism.

Guests:

Robert Zelnick, Professor of journalism at Boston University, former Tel Aviv and Pentagon correspondent

Kevin Cullen, reporter for The Boston Globe, has covered Northern Ireland since the 1980s
