Rethinking Menopause

The cancellation of a large federal study of hormone replacement therapy in post-menopausal women sent shockwaves through the medical community. Conventional wisdom said that women should take hormones to alleviate the symptoms of menopause and for long-term health benefits. Now, thousands of women on estrogen and progestin are being told to halt treatment because of increased risk of breast cancer, strokes, and heart attacks.

This revelation is only the most recent development in the age-old debate about whether to prescribe or not to prescribe hormones to post-menopausal women. In this hour, rethinking menopause. Does hormone replacement therapy do more harm than good? What are the myths–and misconceptions–about menopause? And where does the truth lie?
