Divesting from Israel
photo

Across the country, the push for divestment has spread to more than 40 campuses. The movement condemns Israel for human rights abuses against the Palestinians. Hundreds of big-name academics have signed on, but so far no university has moved to divest.

The current debate isn’t the first time divestment has been used on college campuses as a means to effect social and political change. In the 1980s, the South African divestment campaign helped end apartheid.

Do you see parallels with the apartheid debate? Has Israel become a trendy target?

Guests:

Francis Boyle, professor of international law at The University of Illinois College of Law

Alan Dershowitz, professor at Harvard Law School

Taufiq Rahim, student at Princeton University

  • I attempted to listen to “divesting from Israel” with Alan Dershowitz and Francis Boyle, and got an entirely different show instead. What gives?

  • Yes, I’ve been looking for the same show. At http://www.onpointradio.org/shows/2002/09/ they have erroneously mentioned that Letting Judges Judge (the audio file we hear) and the show we’d like to hear, Divesting Israel, are both at 11:00. But the latter was probably at 10 am and it seems the file has been co-opted by the 2nd show. An innocent error or an attempt to save Dershowitz’s image by making sure no one can hear him in this debate?

  • Hello,
Will this radio station please make the “Divesting from Israel” newscast available.
    Thank you.

  • I phoned the station to purchase a CD copy of this show a few weeks ago, as the show archived here is mislabeled. I was politely promised much at the time. I sincerely hope that WBUR will make an effort to sort this archival error out. I hoped that my offer of cash might help light a fire under someone; but to no avail. It is weeks later and still no CD and no correction to the error. Hampshire College (relatively local) just instigated a divestment program this month. This missing show seems a pertinent addition to the contemporary debate. The skinny on the internet is that Dershowitz embarrasses himself here. One has to wonder if this archival mistake has anything to do with this.
