China’s Worldview
photo

Chinese president Jiang Zemin is in the country tonight. He stepped off his plane at O’Hare Airport today to a U.S. Navy brass band, a red carpet and a thousand Chinese-Chicagoans shouting “warm welcome” and waving tiny red and gold Chinese flags.

Mayor Richard Daley was there, as was the CEO of Chicago-based Motorola. But Jiang’s big destination, coming later this week, is the Bush ranch in Crawford, Texas. And there, the president from Beijing and the president from Washington, will eat barbeque and look out on the world. We know George W’s view–of good and evil, terror and Saddam, American power and pre-emption. But what is Bejing’s big view of the world these days? The so-called People’s Republic is a booming, looming global power with big plans. Up next On Point: the view from China.

Guests:

Jonathan Kaufman, China bureau chief, The Wall Street Journal

David M. Lampton, professor, China Studies at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, director of China Programs, The Nixon Center and author of “Same Bed, Different Dreams: Managing U.S.-China Relations, 1989-2000″

Thomas Christensen, professor of political science at MIT
