Here Comes the Judge, Again
photo

President Bush has asked the Senate to consider 30 candidates for federal judgeship, including Charles Pickering, Sr. of Mississippi who was rejected last year by Democrats who questioned his commitment to civil rights.

Pickering’s chief promoter was Senator Trent Lott, who left in an uproar as Republican leader over remarks that supported Strom Thurmond’s segregationalist presidential ticket of 1948.

The decision to re-nominate Pickering is causing some to question the administration’s commitment to civil rights. It also raises issues of how we go about filling judgeships.

Guests:

Larry Klayman, chairman and general counsel for Judicial Watch

Randall Kennedy, law professor at Harvard Law School

Michael Mills, United States District Court Judge, Oxford, Mississippi

Elizabeth Cavendish, legal director for NARAL Pro-Choice America
