Shunned Poet Speaks Out
Arizona Gray stepped from his quiet life in Hooksett, NH, and landed in a political fray last fall after submitting a poem called “New Hampshire” to his State Senator. When Senator Ted Gatsas proposed it as the state poem, arm-chair critics and the academy came out in force to assail Gray’s work as amateur, or worse. Gray, construction-worker by day, and poet in his off-hours, recently withdrew the poem from consideration. In this radio diary, Arizona Gray questions what makes a poem legitimate and affirms his love for his state with a reading of “New Hampshire.”
