The Future of the Oceans
photo

In past generations, the oceans of the world were teeming with life, and human beings thrived on their bounty. But at the present pace the oceans will soon be empty.

Humans have devastated the stocks of large fish and according to a new study published in Nature, there has been a 90 percent reduction in the past 50 years. Now we have a choice: rebuild the stocks or lose what was once earth’s most bounteous resource.

Click the “Listen” link above to hear about what can be done to save the living stock in the world’s oceans.

Guests:

Ransom Myers, professor of ocean studies, Dalhousie University and co-author of a new study about depleted fish stocks in this week’s issue of the journal Nature

Daniel Pauly, professor of fisheries, University of British Columbia and author of “In a Perfect Ocean”

Carl Safina, author of “Song for the Blue Ocean” and “Eye of the Albatross: Visions of Hope and Survival”

Phill Kline, fisherman for 26 years and founder of the Pacific Marine Conservation Council.
