Gorbachev Urges Cooperation on Iraq

After two days of talks with President Bush late last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin refused to commit troops or money to the reconstruction effort in Iraq. Putin also did not agree to offer support to a new United Nations resolution that the U.S. hopes will encourage other nations to aid the effort there.

Today, in a speech delivered at Brown University in Rhode Island, former Russian leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mikhail Gorbachev criticized the cold reception the United States received from Russia and the international community. While chiding the United States for acting alone, Gorbachev said the great powers should come together and assist the U.S.-led rebuilding of Iraq.
