The Betrayal of Work
photo

If you work hard, you’ll be able to earn a decent income and provide the basics for your family, so goes the American Dream. The reality is something quite different. An astonishing 30 million American men and women–one in four workers–work in jobs that pay poverty wages, provide minimal or no benefits, and allow little flexibility and time for quality child care.

How can we restore fairness to America’s economic order?

Guests:

Beth Shulman, author of “The Betrayal of Work: How Low-Wage Jobs Fail 30 Million Americans”, former vice president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union

Alan Blinder, professor of Economics and Director of Economic Policy Studies at Princeton, author of “Hard Heads, Soft Hearts: Tough Minded Economics for a Just Society”, member of President Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisers from 1993- 1994

Pat Hatcher, Personal Assistant and forster mother

Belinda, Day Care Operator, mother of four

Jack Beatty, On Point News Analyst and senior editor at The Atlantic Monthly magazine
