Sun Microsystems co-founder Bill Joy warned at the height of the technology boom that unfettered tech progress could be apocalyptic. Technology advances with “no controls” and “no brakes,” he cautioned in a ground-breaking article three years ago in Wired Magazine, could “replace our species.”
People paid attention. After all, this was the pioneering architect of systems that are the backbone of the Internet, cellular telephones, networks and stock exchanges, speaking. Bill Joy, the consummate technology guru, was shouting about the dangers of computer-enabled technology, genetic engineering, nanotechnology and robotics.
