For a century, the World Series has captured the nation’s imagination and this year is no exception. In October, dreams are made and hopes dashed on pitchers’ arms, sluggers’ bats and questionable calls from the umpires.

Chronicling the great players of the game are the great baseball writers like Roger Angell, Eliot Asinov, Dick Young and Ring Lardner who have captured the glory and heartbreak of the world series for posterity on the sports pages.

Click the “Listen” link to hear about baseball and the best writing on the first 100 years of the World Series.

Guests:

Bill Littlefield, host of NPR’s “Only A Game,” co-editor of the new book “Fall Classics: The Best Writing About the World Series’ First 100 Years”

Eliot Asinof, author of “Eight Men Out”

Dave Kindred, columnist, The Sporting News
