D.C. Sniper’s Trial Begins

A year after a series of shootings terrorized the Washington DC-area, the trial of suspected sniper John Allen Muhammed began today in Virginia Beach. The 42-year-old Muhammed pleaded not guilty, but if convicted, Muhammed could face the death penalty.

Pulitzer-Prize winning Washington Post reporter Sari Horwitz has co-authored a new book that looks back at the sniper killings. In this segment, Horwitz reads from her book, “Sniper: The Hunt for the Killers Who Terrorized the Nation.” In this excerpt, local and federal police botch a potential major lead in the search for the sniper.
