Democracy in Haiti
photo

The bloody uprising in Haiti climaxed this weekend. Former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide is out — he says by force. The U.S. says he resigned. Either way, he left under intense pressure from the United States and from armed insurgents threatening to take over the capital. The U.S. and France have sent troops to restore order. Now Haiti must work toward a democracy.

Guests:

Tim Padgett, Time Magazine’s Miami bureau chief

Garry Pierre-Pierre, publisher and editor-in-chief of the Haitian Times

James Morrell, executive director, Haiti Democracy Project

Alex Dupuy, professor of sociology, Wesleyan University. He is author of “Haiti in the New World Order: The Limits of the Democratic Revolution” and “Haiti in the World Economy: Class, Race, and Underdevelopment Since 1700.”
