Henry Kissinger on the “Anatomy of Crisis”
photo

In his years as national security advisor, and secretary of state, Henry Kissinger became an icon of diplomacy. Cunning and controversial, his foreign policy initiatives played a crucial role in shaping the events of his time.

His latest book, “Crisis, The Anatomy of Two Major Foreign Policy Crises,” reveals the intimate, inner workings of top-level crisis management in two crises on his watch: the explosive October 1973 war between Israel, Egypt, and Syria, and the sorrowful 1975 American evacuation from Vietnam.

Both echo in the crises of today. The war in Iraq has become a battle for hearts and minds, and the legacy of Vietnam haunts policy makers as an example of the limitations of America’s might. No matter where you stand on Henry Kissinger, he looks at the geopolitical world with an informed eye. In this hour, we look back and look out on the current global challenges facing the United States and the world.

Guests:

Dr. Henry Kissinger, chairman, Kissinger Associates, Former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor. Author of “Crisis, The Anatomy of Two Major Foreign Policy Crises”

Christopher Hill: U.S. Troop Withdrawal ‘On Schedule’

U.S. Ambassaor to Iraq Christopher Hill spoke with On Point live from Baghdad today as early voting gets underway, part of the run-up to Sunday’s elections. “So far so good,” Hill said, despite scattered violence. Hill said that the plan to withdraw U.S. combat troops by Sept. 1, and to leave only a residual advisory force of 50,000 or fewer, remains “very much on schedule.” Observers worry that a spike in violence could derail that timeline.
