Publishing images of dead soldiers returning home has been forbidden since the first Gulf War. But on Sunday, The Seattle Times published pictures taken by a Pentagon contractor of coffins being loaded onto a transport plane in Kuwait. Then on Thursday, Russ Kick published hundreds of Department of Defense photos of soldiers’ coffins returning to a Delaware base that he had obtained through a FOIA request. The Pentagon has since said that the granting of the FOIA request was a mistake. Tonight we look at how imagery has been used in wars past, and discuss the arguments for and against publishing photos of the fallen.
