Until the call came last year, US Navy Judge Advocate General lawyer Lt. Commander Charles Swift defended servicemen accused of drug use and sexual harassment. Now, Lt. Swift is defending a Yemeni prisoner in the American terrorist lock-up at Guantanamo Bay, in what may be the world’s highest profile legal drama.

Swift is fighting hard. He’s reached out to the Supreme Court. He’s attacked the military tribunal system awaiting his client as deeply unjust. He’s compared President Bush to George III in the American Revolution. In sum, he has gone above and beyond the call of duty in making Guantanamo a test ground for American liberty.
