Business, Politics and Crime in the New Russia
photo

The American editor of Forbes Magazine’s Russian edition, Paul Klebnikov, was killed last week in an apparent contract killing in Moscow. Son of Russian Americans, Paul Klebnikov went to work in Russia in hopes of seeing a rebirth for his family’s post-Communist old country.

Klebnikov is at least the 15th journalist killed in Russia, and the first American journalist killed since President Vladimir Putin came into office. What may have led to his murder is a list of the wealthiest 100 people in Russia that Klebnikov published last May, and Russian money does not like attention.

Click one of the “Listen” links to hear about the death of American journalist, Paul Klebnikov, and the lethal intersection of business, politics, and crime in Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

Guests:

Andrew Jack, Moscow Bureau Chief for the Financial Times and author of the forthcoming book, “Inside Putin’s Russia: Can There Be Reform Without Democracy?”

Marshall Goldman, Professor Emeritus of Russian Economics at Wellesley College, Associate Director of Russian Studies at Harvard University, and author of “The Piratization of Russia: Russian Reform Goes Awry”

Serge Schmemann, Editorial Page Editor at the International Herald Tribune, author of an article in today’s New York Times entitled “Journalist’s Death Makes it Harder to Excuse Putin’s Excesses,” and former Moscow Bureau Chief of the New York Times
