Six and a half years and 2.2 billion miles after its launch, Cassini last night became the first spacecraft to enter Saturn’s orbit, and hours later, began transmitting its first images of the planet’s majestic rings. Cheers erupted at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory after Cassini completed its perilous maneuver into Saturn’s orbit. Scientists believe that the 6th rock from the sun, its rings, and its roughly 30 moons hold the secret to the origin of the solar system.
Trina Ray, a science planning engineer with the Cassini mission, describes the breathtaking images of Saturn’s rings that Cassini transmitted earlier today.
