The humanitarian disaster worsens in the Darfur region of Western Sudan. Today, a report released by Human Rights Watch described fresh atrocities in Darfur, including the rape of girls as young as 13.
The United Nations demanded on July 30 that Sudan disarm the Janjaweed militia and bring its leaders to justice within 30 days. But the Human Rights Watch report claims that the marauding Janjaweed militia is being absorbed by the security forces of the Sudanese government.
Georgette Gagnon is the deputy director of the African Division of Human Rights Watch. She joins us live to explain today’s report and the state of affairs in Western Sudan.
