Olympic-sized Commercialism

It’s been a bit of a rough start for the United States at the 28th Summer Olympics. The heirs of the Dream Team lost to Puerto Rico in basketball. Superstar swimmer Michael Phelps could only manage bronze today in the 200 meter freestyle, adding to yesterday’s upset when the men’s 4-by-100 freestyle relay team posted its worst finish ever.

For Massachusetts resident Joan Wickersham, the biggest disappointment with the Olympics hasn’t been her home country’s upset losses. It has been all of the hype and commercialization. In this radio diary, she says she longs for the days when the Olympics were about the competition, not the commercials.
