Martha Stewart Heads to Jail
photo

Martha Stewart is heading to prison. The domestic diva announced today that she wants to begin her five-month sentence as soon as possible, rather than wait for the appeal of her conviction.

Stewart maintains that she has a strong case for appeal, and will reportedly go ahead with it. But she says the best way to get the whole incident behind her is to head to the big house as soon as possible. Her appeal will not be heard until sometime next year, and many legal experts say she has little chance of having her conviction overturned.

Stewart was convicted in March of lying to investigators who were probing her questionable sale of 4000 shares of stock in ImClone Systems, a company run by her friend Sam Waksal.

Hear an excerpt from Martha Stewart’s news conference earlier today in New York City.

Christopher Hill: U.S. Troop Withdrawal ‘On Schedule’

U.S. Ambassaor to Iraq Christopher Hill spoke with On Point live from Baghdad today as early voting gets underway, part of the run-up to Sunday’s elections. “So far so good,” Hill said, despite scattered violence. Hill said that the plan to withdraw U.S. combat troops by Sept. 1, and to leave only a residual advisory force of 50,000 or fewer, remains “very much on schedule.” Observers worry that a spike in violence could derail that timeline.
