Showdown in the Show-Me State
photo

They meet again, this time in St. Louis, Missouri. Bush and Kerry take the stage tonight on the campus of Washington University for a town hall-style meeting.

Polls show that Kerry took the first round. In the six days since that encounter, both sides have come out swinging hard. And in those same six days, there has been news from Iraq that is not good. Saddam did not have weapons of mass destruction, but apparently he wanted them. Both of the presidential contenders are using that data to make their cases.

In contrast to the first debate, the voters will be the ones asking questions tonight. Healthcare, education, and the economy are expected to be on the docket tonight.

Tune in tonight as we preview the shifting terrain of the St. Louis debate.

Guests:

Matthew Cooper, White House correspondent for Time magazine, reporting from St. Louis

Bill Schneider, senior political analyst at CNN

Joan Vennochi, columnist for The Boston Globe

James Muzzo, Republican strategist, contributing editor at The National Review Online, served as deputy director of economic and domestic policy for George H.W. Bush

Dan Payne, Democratic Party media consultant who has worked on John Kerry’s Senate campaigns, political analyst for WBUR

Jack Beatty, On Point news analyst, senior editor at The Atlantic Monthly magazine.

IED’s in Afghanistan: Hard Numbers

The Department of Defense provided On Point with some statistics about IED attacks in Afghanistan, where there has been an increase in the use of such weapons over the past 14 months. It’s striking to see the spike in numbers — from 2,677 IED incidents in 2007 to 8,159 last year.

Christopher Hill: U.S. Troop Withdrawal ‘On Schedule’

U.S. Ambassaor to Iraq Christopher Hill spoke with On Point live from Baghdad today as early voting gets underway, part of the run-up to Sunday’s elections. “So far so good,” Hill said, despite scattered violence. Hill said that the plan to withdraw U.S. combat troops by Sept. 1, and to leave only a residual advisory force of 50,000 or fewer, remains “very much on schedule.” Observers worry that a spike in violence could derail that timeline.
