Ridge Resigns

Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge announced today he will be stepping down in February, unless his successor is approved before then. Ridge is the first man to hold the post, which was created in the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks. He was given the unenviable task of creating a new bureaucracy out of 180,000 thousand people from disparate agencies.

While some critics argue the department sometimes moved slowly and failed to meet some of its goals, Ridge said today he is pleased with the progress that has been made in the past 2 years.

Hear an excerpt of Tom Ridge’s speech today as he announced his resignation as the head of the Office of Homeland Security.
