Young Hmong Reflects on Wisconsin Tragedy
photo

Last week, a Laotian Hmong immigrant was formally charged with six counts of murder after he opened fire on a group of Caucasian deer hunters. Details of what exactly happened in the northern Wisconsin woods remain a bit of a mystery.

Chai Soua Vang says he wandered onto private property and felt threatened when he was surrounded by a group of hunters who yelled racial taunts. Prosecutors argue the facts of the case argue differently.

23 year-old Hmong-American Pha Lo was shocked when she heard the story of the Wisconsin deer-hunting massacre. In this radio diary, Pha Lo says the story of Chai Soua Vang reminds her of the difficulties her parents’ generation of Hmong continue to face as they try to integrate themselves into their new American homeland.

Pha Lo writes for the Pacific News Service in San Francisco, CA.
