Today in Toulouse, France, with the leaders of France, Germany, Britain and Spain looking on, the European consortium Airbus rolled out its latest design — a mammoth, double-decker airliner that can seat up to 800 passengers.

Its wings alone are big enough that seventy cars could park along them. And the company’s expectations for the plane’s success are even bigger still. Airlines have already committed 40 billion dollars to buying the giant jumbo jet even though it hasn’t yet left the ground.

Hear George Novak, an aviation researcher with the Aviation Institute at George Washington University, talk about the new plane.
