Late night television icon Johnny Carson died yesterday after a long battle with emphysema. He was 79 years old.
Carson began his career in radio, and moved into television in the ’50s as the new medium took off. In 1962, after hosting several comedy shows and game shows, he was tapped to replace Jack Paar as host of “The Tonight Show.” Over the next 30 years, his topical monologues, corny skits, and celebrity banter became an American late night fixture. Carson retired in 1992, still at the top. A famously private man, he made few public appearances since.
In tribute, hear the voices of show business legends Oprah Winfrey, Phyllis Diller, Jackie Mason, Don Rickles, David Letterman, Jay Leno, and Joan Rivers as they remember Johnny Carson.
