From “A Study in Scarlet” to “The Musgrave Ritual” to “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” Holmes epitomizes the supreme man of science, the brilliant, brainy detective with the humble scribe and side-kick, who never left a case unsolved.

The creator of Holmes’s character, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, tried to kill him off in 1893. His readers rioted in the streets of London. So Doyle brought him back and made the stories of Sherlock Holmes immortal.
