The Annotated Sherlock Holmes
photo

Sherlock Holmes is the most famous sleuth in English fiction. And 118 years after his adventures with Dr. Watson first hit the magazine pages of Victorian England, Holmes remains an iconic character the world over.

From “A Study in Scarlet” to “The Musgrave Ritual” to “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” Holmes epitomizes the supreme man of science, the brilliant, brainy detective with the humble scribe and side-kick, who never left a case unsolved.

The creator of Holmes’s character, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, tried to kill him off in 1893. His readers rioted in the streets of London. So Doyle brought him back and made the stories of Sherlock Holmes immortal.

Hear a conversation with Leslie Klinger, editor of “The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Short Stories,” about the story behind the world’s most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes.
