The Confirmation Hearings of Alberto Gonzales
photo

As counsel to the White House in the aftermath of 9-11, U.S. Attorney General nominee Alberto Gonzales was in charge of determining where America drew the line on the treatment of detainees, to define the boundary of torture and assess the reach of the Geneva Conventions in an age of terrorism.

Today, in the first day of his confirmation hearings, the Senate Judiciary Committee heard testimony from Gonzales about his role in leading the United States to cross that line in the abuse and torture of detainees in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay prisons.

Tune in to hear about the background and gruelling questioning of Attorney General nominee Alberto Gonzales.

Guests:

Mark Danner, staff writer at The New Yorker magazine, professor of Journalism at the University of California at Berkeley and author of “Torture and Truth: America, Abu Ghraib and the War On Terror”;
David Rivkin, Partner, Baker & Hostetler LLP, served in the Department of Justice and the White House in the Reagan and George H. W. Bush Administrations;
Jack Beatty, “On Point” news analyst and senior editor at the Atlantic Monthly magazine.
