Using the Internet To Help
photo

The postings on the Internet bulletin boards are enough to break anyone’s heart. A daughter searching for her father who was vacationing in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Friends worried about a missing family who had traveled to a wedding in Sri Lanka.

Retired California Internet specialist Mary Duffy was moved to action when she began reading tsunami-related message boards online. For the past week and a half, she has spent nearly every waking moment cross-referencing internet lists and news wires and emailing information to families seeking loved ones. At any given moment, she has 20 windows open on her computer, searching to connect the living and dead and lost.

In this radio diary, Mary Duffy describes why she’s immersed herself in the search for complete strangers halfway around the world.

Guests:

Mary Duffy is a retired Internet specialist. She lives in Silicon Valley, California.
