American Failures

American history is star-studded with the great champions of the American dream. But there is a dark side to the American dream, the long history of ordinary men and women who tried everything to succeed, but in the end, failed.

Americans hold special scorn for the term “loser,” but in a nation that worships success, their stories might say more about the American struggle than the great lions of any age.

In this radio diary, history professor Scott Sandage, author of the new book, “Born Losers,” tells the rich, revealing tale of the American dream, gone wrong.

Guests:

Scott Sandage, professor of history at Carnegie Mellon University. He is also author of “Born Losers: A History of Failure in America.”
