FDA Review Committee Proposed

The Food and Drug Administration announced today that it is forming a new independent board to monitor approved medicines once they are on the market.

The move comes on the eve of a widely anticipated meeting to discuss how the agency has handled questions on the safety of the huge-selling pain relief pills Vioxx, Celebrex and Bextra.

Gardiner Harris, who covers the FDA for the New York Times, examines the implications of the move, and take a close look at the man named yesterday to head the FDA, Dr. Lester M. Crawford.
