Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice landed in Rome today, half way through an eight-day, nine-nation tour that takes her through Europe and parts of the Middle East. It is her first official trip abroad as Secretary of State, and one that the Bush administration hopes will mark a fresh start with European allies.
Rice’s trip comes at moment of movement in the Middle East. Today, both Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said tomorrow in Egypt they will declare a formal cease-fire — a breakthrough that comes after both sides also accepted invitations from Secretary Rice to meet with President Bush later this spring.
Hear Andrea Stone, correspondent for USA Today traveling with the Secretary of State, talk about how Condoleezza Rice is feeling about this trip so far.
