Among this past week’s major news:

1) The Senate passes legislation that will make it more difficult for consumers to wipe out debt through bankruptcy.

2) A shooting inside an Atlanta courthouse leaves a judge and a court reporter dead.

3) Lebanon’s ousted Prime Minister Omar Karame returns to the job after massive pro-Syria demonstrations.

4) General George Casey is tight-lipped about what led to the shooting of an Italian journalist by U.S. forces in Iraq. It was a particularly violent week in Iraq. Among the bloody events: a suicide bomber killed 40 at a funeral in Mosul, and 30 bullet-ridden bodies are found in a mass grave by the Syrian border.

5) Former President Clinton’s second chest surgery in 6 months is called successful.

6) Michael Jackson narrowly avoids imprisonment after he shows up more than an hour late for his trial, complaining of back pain.

7) Dan Rather signs off for the final time as anchor of the CBS Evening News, after 24 years.
