France’s 35-Hour Work Week

Tens of thousands of striking workers paralyzed Paris today, on the same day the International Olympic Committee was in town evaluating the city’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games. Paris has been considered the favorite among the cities being considered for 2012.

The workers were protesting government moves to lengthen France’s beloved 35-hour work week. Subways were snarled, commuter trains were canceled, streets were filled with supporters of the 35-hour week.

Hear Peter Ford, Chief European correspondent for the Christian Science Monitor, describe the scene is Paris today.
