President Bush announced in a news conference this morning that he is nominating Paul Wolfowitz, a top Pentagon official and one of the chief architects of the war in Iraq, to head the World Bank.
Wolfowitz is best kown as an ardent neo-conservative at the right hand of Pentagon chief Donald Rumsfeld. The international community has been critical of U.S. policy in Iraq and overseas reaction to today’s announcement was muted. Wolfowitz must still receive approval from the board of the World Bank some time before May, when the Bank’s current president, American James Wolfensohn, steps down.
