China’s leaders introduced a bill today that would authorize the use of “non-peaceful measures” if Taiwan ever moves to declare formal independence. Beijing described the bill as a pre-emptive move against Taiwan’s pro-independence president Chen Shui-ban.
Taiwanese officials reacted strongly, protesting the Chinese stance and announcing military exercises aimed at repelling any invasion from the mainland.
