The Italian Shooting Tragedy in Baghdad

The fallout continues over the shootings by American soldiers that left Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena wounded and an Italian intelligence officer dead in Baghdad last week.

Today, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi publicly disputed the U.S. version of the events that led to the shooting. “It feels like an injustice beyond any sentiment,” Berlusconi said in his first public address since the shooting. “It’s something unreasonable.” President Bush has promised a full investigation of the incident, which unfolded on the road leading to the Baghdad airport.

Los Angeles Times reporter Alissa Rubin knows the road where the shooting occurred. In fact, she had traveled it just five hours before Sgrena last Friday. In this radio diary, she describes the “airport road,” and says the chaos there could help explain how the shootings could have happened.
