Johnny Apple’s America
photo

Longtime political correspondent for The New York Times, R. W. “Johnny” Apple has traveled for more than 30 years across the United States in search of great architecture, great culture, and, of course, great food.

He observes the nation’s greatest cities with a keen eye for detail, historical and gustatory. “Buffalo,” he writes, “is like a dowager in decline with good bones to remind people of her more prosperous days. Louisville is the home of horse racing and the infamous Slugger. Milwaukee is steeped in Germanic heritage, American wurstmachers and Schlitz.”

Hear a conversation with R. W. “Johnny” about Miami, San Francisco, Honolulu and more.

Guests:

R. W. Apple, associate editor for The New York Times. His new book is “Apple’s America: The Discriminating Traveler’s Guide to 40 Great Cities in the United States and Canada”.;

Jack Beatty, “On Point” news analyst and a senior editor at The Atlantic Monthly.
