Radio’s Newest Revolution

The radio landscape in cities across the country has been transformed over the past couple of months by a new music format. It goes by names like Jack, Mike, Charlie, or Bob. Its hallmark: music of all genres, ranging from 80s glam rock to Motown to the dance tracks from the 21st century.

It’s not completely random — every song on the play-list has been a Top 40 hit at some point during the past three decades. But it can sound pretty random when AC/DC is followed by Aretha Franklin and then John Mayer. Critics say it’s a flash in the pan. But so far, the ratings have been strong for stations that have adopted the format.

Mike Henry, one of the founders of “Jack” says it’s the future of radio.
