President Bush addressed the nation yesterday, stressing the importance of “completing the mission” in Iraq but offering no timetable for U.S. disengagement.

His statements marked the one-year anniversary of official Iraqi sovereignty. Many saw the speech as an attempt to shore up public support for the war, which has steadily declined as insurgency attacks continue and the U.S. death toll and costs add up.

Guests:

General Barry McCaffrey, former four-star general and commander-in-chief of U.S. southern command

Richard Eichenberg, associate professor of political science, Tufts University

Jack Beatty, On Point news analyst and senior editor, The Atlantic Monthly

Elizabeth Sullivan, associate editorial page editor, The Cleveland Plain Dealer

Beth Barber, letters editor, The San Diego Union Tribune

James Howard Gibbons, editor of the opinion pages, The Houston Chronicle
