Hot Cities on the Move
There is a new look at the fastest growing and shrinking cities in America, based on U.S. census data released today. The fastest growing city with a population of more than 1 million: Gilbert, Arizona, which grew 43 percent from April 2000 to July 2004. At the bottom of the list is Detroit, Michigan, which lost 51,000 people — shrinking by 5.4 percent.
William Frey, research scientist at the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan, looks at the reasons behind these population shifts.
