Rice urges democracy for Egypt

Today, in a speech at the American University of Cairo, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said democracy was inevitable for the Middle East, and urged the Egyptian government to lead the way toward political reform. Rice called on President Mubarak to put his faith in the decision of the people in the upcoming presidential elections.

Earlier today, On Point spoke to Rami Khouri, editor of Lebanon’s Daily Star, about Secretary Rice’s visit to Egypt. He described Rice’s support for the people of Egypt as a step forward for the region, and a difference from past American policy.

Guests:

Rami Khouri, editor of Lebanon’s Daily Star.
