It is perhaps the most famous kiss ever photographed. On August 15, 1945, the Allies celebrated victory over Japan, marking the end of World War II. Over 750,000 Americans gathered to celebrate in Times Square.
One of them, an exuberant sailor named Carl Muscarello, planted a big smooch on a perfect stranger — a very surprised young nurse, 27-year-old Edith Shain. Yesterday, on the 60th anniversary of V-J Day, Edith Shain, and Carl Muscarello reenacted the kiss in Times Square.
In this radio diary, the now-87-year-old great-grandmother from Santa Monica, California, and the 78-year old grandfather from Florida, look back on that kiss.
