Katrina’s flood waters are slowly receding from parts of New Orleans, but angry demands for accountability are piling up all over. New Orleans’ local newspaper, the Times-Picayune, is calling for every official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency to be fired, especially Chief Michael Brown.

Congressmen, Senators and many citizens aren’t far behind. The word from the White House, though, is that we need to focus on solving problems, not playing the blame game. Already last Friday, when he visited the wounded Gulf Coast, President Bush himself expressed support for the work of FEMA director Brown.

The President has now vowed an investigation of his own, but critics ask whether he’s the one to hold the government to account for the chaos after the hurricane. The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives are planning inquiries of their own and the fever is high.
