
John Roberts doesn’t even have the job, and he’s already being tapped for a promotion. Today, President Bush picked Roberts to succeed William Rehnquist as chief justice of the US Supreme Court. The announcement comes the day before confirmation hearings were scheduled to begin on Roberts’ qualifications to be just one of seven. With the nominee by his side this morning in the Oval Office, President Bush praised Roberts as a man of integrity and fairness. He also said he expected the Senate to move swiftly on his confirmation:
